Smith Industries is the leading fabricator of oil and gas surface production equipment in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Since 2004, we've provided design engineering, drafting, procurement, fabrication, and modular construction to operators across the Permian Basin.

The Vessel Shop Fabrication Foreman leads the daily execution of an assigned vessel production line. This is a hands-on, floor-based leadership position responsible for crew assignments, safe work practices, fabrication quality, labor productivity, and production progress. The foreman works with the Production Manager, Quality, Engineering, Material Management, and other supervisors to deliver work to approved drawings, applicable API and ASME requirements, and company procedures.

Essential Duties:

  • Plan and assign daily work by work order, crew skill, material availability, and production priorities established by the Production Manager. Communicate targets and monitor progress throughout the shift.
  • Verify that approved drawing packets, material, pick tickets, weld maps, and applicable CNC files are available before starting work. Escalate incomplete releases, shortages, and drawing questions promptly.
  • Oversee vessel fit-up, shell and head assembly, nozzle orientation, internals, supports, and dimensional checks against approved drawings. Prevent unauthorized changes and coordinate technical questions with Engineering and Quality.
  • Confirm assigned welders hold the required qualifications and follow approved welding procedure specifications. Coordinate qualification and training needs with Quality.
  • Enforce safety requirements, conduct crew safety meetings, maintain PPE availability, and stop work when conditions are unsafe. Report incidents and near misses immediately.
  • Maintain orderly work areas and safe access. Inspect tools, fabrication equipment, and lifting accessories within assigned responsibilities; report defects and coordinate maintenance needs.
  • Ensure work is ready for inspection and required inspection hold points are observed. Coordinate with Quality and ensure repairs are completed and accepted before release to the next operation.
  • Maintain material identification and traceability through fabrication. Coordinate material staging, shortages, transfers, and unused material returns with Material Management.
  • Track actual labor hours against assigned work-order budgets. Review timesheets for accuracy, confirm correct labor charging, and authorize overtime only within established approval limits.
  • Report production status, labor variances, rework, inspection holds, and constraints to the Production Manager. Recommend and execute agreed recovery actions.
  • Coach employees in fabrication methods, workmanship, procedures, and work instructions. Support orientation, assess craft skills, and recommend development or corrective action through established processes.
  • Address employee concerns professionally and coordinate personnel matters with the Production Manager and Human Resources.
  • Ensure required fabrication and department records are complete, accurate, and organized. Provide clear shift handovers covering work status, shortages, inspection holds, and next steps.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • At least five years of relevant vessel fabrication experience, including at least two years in a lead or supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising vessel fit-up, assembly, and welding activities in a production environment.
  • Ability to read fabrication drawings, weld symbols, bills of material, and work instructions.
  • Working knowledge of applicable API and ASME fabrication requirements, approved welding procedures, inspection hold points, and material traceability.
  • Ability to recognize material defects, dimensional discrepancies, and workmanship issues and coordinate appropriate resolution.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to hold crews accountable and work across departments.
  • Ability to maintain accurate production and timekeeping records and work a flexible schedule as production needs require.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent work experience

U.S. Equal Opportunity Employment Information (Completion is voluntary)

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

You are being given the opportunity to provide the following information in order to help us comply with federal and state Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action record keeping, reporting, and other legal requirements.

Completion of the form is entirely voluntary. Whatever your decision, it will not be considered in the hiring process or thereafter. Any information that you do provide will be recorded and maintained in a confidential file.

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 4/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
